PRICES of leafy vegetables in Shenzhen had risen by 30 percent in the past three weeks because of low temperatures, city farm produce wholesale markets said yesterday.

The average price of leafy vegetables increased by 32 percent to 1.38 yuan (US$0.21) per 500 grams compared with three weeks ago. Among these, the price of spinach increased by 43.6 percent to 2.01 yuan.

The price hike followed a small decrease at the end of November.

Cold weather across the province in the past two weeks has resulted in the increase, said Lin Shaoru, a manager at the Buji Farm Produce Wholesale Market, the largest of its kind in Shenzhen.

Prices of peppers, beans, tomatoes, potatoes and eggplants, however, dropped by about 10 percent because of ample supplies in the city.
