Policeman detained
A TRAFFIC police officer was detained for allegedly being involved in an accident that killed an electric bicycle rider.
Zhou Guoquan of the Nanshan Traffic Police Brigade allegedly collided with the electric bike rider, identified as Yang, on Dec. 15 on Lantian Road in the Shekou Port area. Yang died at the scene, police said yesterday.
The case is still under investigation and no other details were available.
Bike rider killed
AN electric bike rider was killed after he was hit by a bus at an intersection of Zhenhua Road near the Central Park in Futian District on Monday morning.
Witnesses said the man, identified only as Cao, 51, a native of Henan Province, was rushing to cross the road, leaving no time for the bus driver to stop.
There were no traffic lights at the intersection. The bus driver, whose identity was not disclosed, was still being questioned.
Housing fund
A TOTAL of 79 companies had deposited money for their employees into the city housing provident fund through 46 designated banks yesterday, the first day of operations for the city housing provident fund center.
Under a government rule regarding the housing fund, both employers and employees are required to each contribute at least 5 percent of an employee s monthly income into the fund. The cap of the housing fund payment is 20 percent.
However, employees earning the city s legal minimum wage of 1,100 yuan (US$167) a month can apply for exemption from paying into the housing provident fund. Enterprises found to be in deficit for two consecutive years can also apply for a reduced housing fund payments.
More than 700 people went to the housing fund management office on Qiaoxiang Road in Futian District to inquire about the procedures for withdrawals and obtaining loans from the provident fund.
