New checkpoint to cost $210m

WORK on a new checkpoint in Liantang connecting Shenzhen and Hong Kong will start in 2013 for a total cost of 1.4 billion yuan (US$210 million), according to the city s public works bureau.

The checkpoint will be in Xilingxia Village in Liantang in Luohu District, and cover about 29,700 square meters with floor space of 75,600 square meters, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

It is designed to handle 30,000 travelers and 17,850 vehicles a day.

The checkpoint is scheduled to be completed by 2018.

The bureau is taking public submissions on the potential influence on the environment.

Submissions can be sent to www.szwb.gov.cn.

Meanwhile, the bureau and Hong Kong s Civil Engineering Development Department have opened an international design competition for the checkpoint inspection building, with prizes totaling HK$1.32 million (US$180,070).
