Cooler weather
CITY temperatures will further drop to a minimum of 5 degrees Celsius on New Year s Day with a new stream of cold air expected to arrive in Guangdong on Dec. 30. The city s meteorological observatory reminded holidaymakers to be aware of road conditions in northern Guangdong during the holidays as the temperatures would fall below zero, the observatory said yesterday.
Man stabbed
A MAN was stabbed to death when he was watching people playing mahjong Sunday evening in Buji, Longgang District.
The victim Liu Weisheng, 33, a native of Hunan, was watching his friend play mahjong in a grocery store in Daliang Village when his friend began quarreling with another player, a Hubei native surnamed Luo. Luo chased Liu s friend with a knife and Liu criticized Luo. Luo stabbed Liu twice in the stomach and he died from loss of blood, doctors said. Police are investigating.
Firm candidates
THE Shenzhen Enterprise Confederation unveiled a list of top 100 enterprises in Shenzhen yesterday to solicit public opinion. Huawei Technologies, China Ping an Insurance and China Resources Vanguard Co. Ltd. were the top three on the list. It was the eighth year the confederation had selected top enterprises.
Securities scam
NEARLY 150 people were recently arrested in two police actions to crack down on illegal securities businesses. Twelve gangs allegedly engaged in unlicensed securities businesses involving tens of millions of yuan had been broken up, police said yesterday. Most of those arrested posed as stock brokers, charging high commissions and membership fees for recommending stocks.
Medical card
A NEW medical card could now be used at seven city public hospitals, including the Shenzhen People s Hospital, Shenzhen No. 2 People s Hospital and Beijing University Shenzhen Hospital, since yesterday, according to the city health department.
The card could be used as a medical insurance card to pay bills and patients could also use the card to register at the hospitals.
The patient s medical history would be recorded on the card. It can save time and money for patients lining up to register and seeking medical records, Luo Lexuan, vice director from the department said.
