POLICE punished 61 drivers for illegally parking in the Taren Science and Technology Park causing a traffic jam in the industrial zone Sunday, the first day of a weeklong blitz on illegal parking.
Besides a fine of 200 yuan (US$30) and a deduction of three points, 21 vehicles were also towed away.
The action was taken following an order by Mayor Xu Qin who attended a meeting Saturday to hear public complaints.
The industrial zone is in Futian District between Shennan Boulevard and Binhe Road and has limited parking space. It often becomes severely congested as vehicles cram into the narrow roads.
Police will deploy more officers to direct traffic during rush hours on roads leading to the industrial zone.
The blitz on illegal parking will last until the weekend.
