Session observers

THE standing committee of the Shenzhen Municipal People s Congress is inviting 40 residents including expats to observe the opening of the second session of the Fifth Shenzhen Municipal People s Congress and hear the work report by Shenzhen Municipal Government on Jan. 16.

Chinese applicants are required to be Shenzhen hukou holders and aged above 18 years old. They can apply with ID cards or passports at the south gate of Section A at the Shenzhen Civic Center during working hours Tuesday, the general office of the standing committee said Friday.

Gas explosion

A GAS explosion rocked an apartment building on Lianhua Road in Longgang District on Friday. No one was injured. The explosion happened at 11:25 a.m. when police had almost finished evacuating the building. A strong smell of gas prompted residents to call police. Police found a woman inside a room after the explosion and a preliminary investigation showed she had attempted suicide with the explosion. The woman was not injured.

Fatal long hair

A WOMAN mechanic was killed Friday in an accident after her long hair became caught in a machine she was repairing. The woman, in her 20s, worked for Kedisheng Industrial Co. in Guangming Subdistrict. Workers cut the power supply but it was too late to save the woman. An investigation is continuing.

Train death

A MAN was killed by a train when he was walking on the Buji section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen railway Friday. Video showed the man, Liu, 27, a native of Henan, was suspected of committing suicide after he climbed into the railway area. He walked for about 20 minutes before he sat down on the track. He stood up when a train approached and then squatted down before the train hit him.

The railway authority warned that railway property was enclosed and entry was restricted.

Aged care center

A DAY care center for the elderly occupying 2,000 square meter opened Friday in Futian District. The Yuandong Community Aged Day Care Center, in Yuanling Road East, is the first day care center for the elderly in Futian and providing meals and dietary information, health care, and social activities. There is also a bathhouse where care workers can assist those with a disability to take a bath.

The center planned to eventually provide 24-hour service to the elderly.
