Pig adds grunt to man s protest

A MAN with a pig tied to his car protested in front of a car dealer s premises in Bao an District on Wednesday, demanding compensation for defects in his car.

The man, identified as Tang, said he bought the car 18 months ago. He claimed the tires were defective and were responsible for a serious accident in which four people were injured, Thursday s Shenzhen Evening News reported.

Tying a pig to my car to protest at the shop means I do not approve of the shop s attitude toward compensation. It shows they treat us worse than a pig, Tang said.

Tang told the paper his car had traveled only 13, 790 kilometers, but the tires were seriously worn. This had caused the accident on Jingzhu Highway on Dec. 12.

I spent more than 290,000 yuan to buy this car and I hardly used it because I normally drive a company car at work. I think the shop or the carmaker should pay a refund and compensate me for my family s injuries, he said.

Tang was returning to Shenzhen with relatives from Hunan Province on Jingzhu Highway on Dec. 12. When we got on the highway, we felt something was wrong with the car, so we called the shop. They told me it might be a problem with the tires and told us to drive back slowly for a check, Tang said.

Tang said he turned on the hazard lights and was driving back at about 80 kilometers per hour when the car overturned, injuring four people. There was nothing on the road, not even a passing car. The car overturned itself, he said.

Traffic police handling the accident said it could have been caused by worn tires.

However, the car dealer, Huaxin Branch of Shenzhen DFC Automobile Sales and Service Co. Ltd., said they had sent specialist staff to the accident scene to investigate. There are many reasons for worn tires, such as driving habits, weight in the boot and road problems. Tire quality could also be one of the reasons. You have to provide a quality test certificate and an accident responsibility protocol by the traffic department. However, Tang provided neither, so it is difficult to deal with the matter, a manager from the shop, identified as Zhu, said.

Tang refused the test, saying it should be the shop s responsibility to pay for the test. They told us it was fine to drive back slowly. We followed their instructions and had an accident, so this should be paid by them, he said.

We will try our best to deal with his problem but we think it is better to sit down and talk to find a legal way to resolve the problem instead of taking a pig to the store every day, Zhu said. (Wang Yuanyuan)
