THE toll for Wutong Mountain Tunnel in Yantian District is expected to be canceled before March, according to a district government meeting.
Motorists have to pay a 10-yuan (US$1.52) toll to pass through the tunnel, which connects Yantian District and downtown Shenzhen.
Fewer private vehicles are using the tunnel since a new free expressway was completed in 2008.
However, the tunnel is still the most convenient way to travel between Shatoujiao and the downtown area.
The tunnel is operated by a Hong Kong company and the city government has started negotiations to acquire the tunnel.
Commuters have long called for the cancellation of the tunnel toll to reduce transport costs and enhance the development of the district.
