THE New Year holidays will be cold and dry, and northern mountain and highland areas will experience frost, the Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory said yesterday.
Minimum temperatures would plunge to 6 degrees Celsius on Saturday, New Year s Day.
Minimum temperatures will remain below 10 degrees Celsius for the three-day holidays, 3 degrees lower than the average temperature during New Year holidays, the observatory said. Mountain and highland areas will be 1 to 2 degrees lower.
The cold front was expected to start to affect Shenzhen tonight.
Observatory records show the average temperature for the three days in Shenzhen is 15.6 degrees Celsius and the highest temperature of 27.2 degrees Celsius was recorded in 1957. The lowest temperature was 2.2 degrees Celsius recorded in 1974.
The cold front will bring the minimum temperature in northern Guangdong cities down to around zero degrees Celsius. The Guangdong Meteorological Observatory reminded motorists to take extra care on the roads as visibility is expected to be below 1,000 meters.
