A MAN was shot in the arm as he was running from police following a dispute over a 250-yuan (US$38) bill at a restaurant in Bao an District on Tuesday.
The man, identified as Zhu, and his girlfriend who was also shot, were being treated at Songgang Hospital, guarded by Songgang police, yesterday s Southern Metropolis Daily reported.
Armed with two knives, Zhu allegedly threatened police and an officer was injured. Police fired a warning shot, but he jumped on a motorcycle with his girlfriend and tried to escape. Police fired two more shots, the Bao an District Public Security Subbureau said.
Zhu, his girlfriend and five friends ate together at around midnight. They were upset with the 250-yuan bill which they thought was an insult. In Chinese slang, 250 has a similar meaning to fool.
After quarreling with the owner, he charged us 168 yuan, so I paid and left first at about 2 a.m., said one of Zhu s friends, identified as Yang.
But Zhu continued to quarrel and took two knives from the kitchen and chased a waiter. I was so scared and called police immediately. When the police arrived, he refused to be arrested and started chasing the police with the knives. Not long after, I heard the shots, said the owner of the restaurant, identified as Huang.
Zhu claimed men at the restaurant had attacked them with an iron bar, so he fought back with the knives.
Police are investigating.
