THE Shenzhen Intermediate People s Court has sentenced three people to more than 10 years in prison after they were convicted of heading a syndicate smuggling electronic products and furs.
The court said the brother and sister, surnamed Wen, and a man surnamed Tang were the masterminds behind an attempt Dec. 7 last year when the driver of a container truck loaded with 5,520 smuggled LCDs escaped after crashing through the Huanggang Checkpoint, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported yesterday.
The gang had smuggled a total of 22,560 LCDs from October to December last year, evading taxes totaling 288,692 yuan (US$43,591).
The smuggled goods also included electronics and furs subject to 798,127 yuan in taxes.
Five other unidentified members of the group were given jail terms ranging from one to three years. (Li Hao, Yang An ni)
