A PET 7.5-kilogram tortoise in Nanshan District laid three eggs on New Year s Day.
The wife of the family, surnamed Yan, bought the tortoise from a construction worker for 1,000 yuan (US$151) last month, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.
Yan was going to free the tortoise when it recovered from an injury.
The family spared no effort to care for the tortoise, which Yan said could be quite old according to its weight.
At around 9 p.m. Saturday, the tortoise laid the eggs, attracting neighbors, who hoped to touch the eggs for good luck in the new year.
Yan has delayed freeing the tortoise until the eggs hatch.
It will take 50 to 60 days for the little tortoises to come into the world, Yan said.
Yan buys and frees animals three times a year, the Daily report said.
