SHENZHEN had broken up 27 organized crime gangs in 2010 in an intensified effort to fight criminal activities. This was the most in Guangdong Province, city police told a press conference at the weekend.
City courts had convicted more than 370 people in connection with 22 cases of organized crime this year.
In last year s crackdown, Shenzhen police confiscated 18 pistols with 73 rounds of ammunition and 50 vehicles. More than 22.6 million yuan (US$3.3 million) in criminal proceeds was frozen, said Deng Guangsheng, a senior official with the public security bureau s criminal investigation department.
Shenzhen police arrested two fugitives wanted by police in Macao and Taiwan, Deng said.
By Dec. 30, Shenzhen police had netted five suspects on the most-wanted list while more than 80 suspects involved in organized crime turned themselves in.
City prosecutors had filed charges against 261 suspects last year, which included public servants, the conference was told. No details were given.
In one case, a suspect surnamed Zhong had led a gang that manipulated gambling, prostitution and drug deals in Sungang Village in Luohu District since 2003, under the protection of local public servants, according to prosecutors.
On Dec. 24, 19 suspects were charged with intentional harm, bribery, swindling and organizing prostitution.
