SURGEONS at Shanxia Hospital were forced to amputate a finger of a 4-year-old boy after his finger became caught in an escalator at Shunping Department Store in Pinghu Subdistrict, Longgang District, last week.
Doctors had tried to reattach the finger, but the procedure was not successful.
The boy, Ma Yuebin, and his father went shopping at the department store Friday. After they paid for their purchases, the boy ran ahead of his father, going down the escalator from the second floor. Suddenly, the boy s father saw him being carried by a security guard with blood all over his hand.
Part of the index finger on his left hand had been severed when the boy stuck his finger into the gap between the escalator stairs, his father said.
Ma was rushed to hospital after first aid at a pharmacy in the department store. Doctors reattached the finger, but the procedure failed.
The department store management said it was not their responsibility because the father had not taken proper care of his son. The department store refused compensation.
A department store manager, identified as Xie, refused to compensate, saying the escalator was managed by the property owner. He said he was not aware of the matter. The security guard on duty that day could not be contacted.
This attitude is unacceptable, said the father. The department store should be partly responsible for the faulty escalator, he said.
However, he admitted that he should be partly responsible for neglecting to take better care of the boy.
The surgery to amputate the finger is scheduled for today.
