RIVER pollution had been alleviated in the past few years following the implementation of pollution control measures.
The river pollution index dropped by 26.2 in the 11th Five-Year Program (2006-2010) and sulfur dioxide emissions had been reduced by 13,700 tons, the Shenzhen environment commission said in a report to the Ministry of Environmental Protection on Sunday.
An inspection team spent three days inspecting city efforts to conserve energy and reduce harmful emissions. The environment authority estimates sulfur dioxide emissions in 2010 would be about 29,300 tons. In the past five years, the city spent 26 billion yuan (US$3.92 billion) on emissions reduction and pollution control efforts and the air quality and water quality had been improved.
In the past five years, more than 10,000 projects had been vetoed for failing environmental standards, accounting for 7.3 percent of the total number of projects that were submitted for approval.
The licenses of 58 enterprises were revoked and 7,322 enterprises had been fined and ordered to rectify shortcomings since 2007. (Han Ximin)
