THE general manager of a Shenzhen battery company spent more than 1 million yuan (US$147,000) on a birthday banquet for his 1-year-old twin granddaughters at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center on Saturday.
The grandfather, the general manager of Shenzhen Roofer Technology Co. Ltd. who was unnamed, invited more than 2,400 guests to the party at Hall 5 of the center in Futian District. Guests included friends, relatives and city government officials in charge of the battery industry, the Daily Sunshine reported yesterday.
More than 20 girls in receptionist costumes waited outside the hall to greet guests who were then welcomed at a red-carpet ceremony. Professional art troupes performed at the party, the report said.
Each of the 120 tables was served dishes worth 12,000 yuan, including quality red wines and seafood such as abalone and lobster, according to the report.
The expenditure on each table was equal to what I earn in a year, said Zhou, one of more than 300 waiters and waitresses at the party.
I have been a waiter here for eight years but it was the first time I have seen such an opulent banquet, he said.
