SANYA in Hainan Province topped holiday destinations during the Spring Festival holiday, according to data from the major travel agencies in Shenzhen.
A good number of travelers had made reservations with travel agencies when the school semester ended, the Shenzhen Economic Daily reported Thursday.
Destinations in tropical regions and the southern hemisphere were popular choices for travelers wanting to get away from the cold.
Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, where temperatures range from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, had attracted a lot of travelers with package tours now priced at 2,000 to 4,000 yuan (US$300-600) per person.
Package tours to Australia where it is early summer were also popular with tours costing about 10,000 yuan per person.
Other island destinations for winter getaways include the Maldives and Bali. A one-week holiday in Maldives is about 7,000 yuan per person while a five-day tour of Bali is just 4,000 yuan per person. (Tina Chen)
