A TODDLER died when he was run over by a police car in the Liuyue Industrial Zone in Longgang District on Thursday.
This was the third fatal accident involving a police car this year.
Police officer Luo of Liuyue Police Station was on patrol when he drove his car to a lane where people were playing mahjong in front of a grocery store, according to the boy s father Fang.
When Luo learned they were relatives celebrating Fang s birthday, Luo warned them not to make too much noise before he left.
After Luo started his car, I found that my 2-year-old baby, who was playing in the lane, had been knocked down by the police car, Fang said.
The police officer must have been drunk as he was red-faced and I could smell [alcohol] when he spoke to me, Fang said.
Luo called police to report the accident and doctors pronounced the boy dead at the scene.
A breath test showed Luo had not been drinking alcohol, a police officer surnamed Yi of Henggang Traffic Police Unit said.
Police also took a blood sample from Luo for testing. The result was the same.
