THE Ministry of Education had approved the construction of South University of Science and Technology of China (SUST), the university announced Sunday.
The ministry confirmed that the university would be a public university. The first phase was expected to be completed in 2012, Chinese newspapers reported yesterday.
The ministry approved planning and construction of the university at a meeting in Beijing on Sept. 27. The documents were sent to the Guangdong Provincial Government on Dec. 24.
Although it was not yet authorized, the university had started enrolling students in September last year. An unidentified university official told the Daily Sunshine enrollment was still under discussion.
The official also said that Shenzhen would implement a regulation for the university this year, providing legal safeguards for the university s enrollment. The university will confirm its final enrollment list during the winter vacation and the first semester with 50 students is expected to start in spring, she said.
Costing 2.48 billion yuan (US$376 million), the university would enroll students for experimental classes after they had completed two years of high school.
The president of SUST, Zhu Qingshi, confirmed earlier that the university diploma was not yet approved by the Ministry of Education, but this would be a reform in Chinese education because nearly all universities worldwide issued their own diplomas.
