A TOTAL of 563 people were killed in 1,737 traffic accidents in 2010, a fall of 11.2 percent, a meeting of Shenzhen traffic police was told Monday.
The accidents left 1,975 people injured and resulted in economic losses of 9.42 million yuan (US$1.43 million), Liu Fengjun, head of the city s traffic police bureau, said.
In contrast, the number of accidents on Shenhui Road increased by 25 percent and the death toll by 50 percent, compared with 2009, the meeting was told. Shenhui Road had been upgraded as part of the Metro project but fatalities increased to 30 with 92 people injured in 89 accidents last year.
Three accidents each involved the deaths of three or more people with a total of 11 people killed.
The 10 top violators were named at the meeting. They included Chen Chuanbing, the owner of a freight transport company in Bao an District whose truck violated traffic rules 95 times in 2010. (Han Ximin)
