FURTHER examinations were needed to determine the type of explosive used in a bomb blast in a restaurant in Bao an District on Monday, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

The explosive resembled powder used to make firecrackers, police said.

The bomb exploded at 10 p.m. Monday in the restaurant in Dalang Subdistrict in the district.

Media reports quoted a cook in the restaurant, identified only as Wang, as saying someone had called the restaurant owner at around 9 p.m. Monday, claiming a bomb had been placed in the restaurant and demanding 20,000 yuan (US$3,038). The restaurant owner, who was not identified, called police who evacuated the restaurant before the explosion at 10 p.m. There were no casualties.

The restaurant reopened Tuesday morning with some of the diners who fled Monday night returning to pay their bills, the restaurant owner said.

He was considering installing camera monitors.

The investigation is continuing. (Li Hao)
