A KEY member of a Shenzhen organized crime gang had recently been arrested after absconding seven years ago, police said.
Li Mouhua, former vice board chairman of the Guanfenghua Group, a criminal organization based in Luohu District, was detained by police in his hometown in Zhongwei County in Ningxia on Dec. 24 and escorted back to Shenzhen on Dec. 31, Shenzhen police said last week.
Li built a reputation for audacity in street fighting when he began working for the company in 1997. He was promoted to take charge of security guards and was vice chairman of the board when the gang was rounded up by police in May 2004. Li fled to Wuxi City in Jiangsu Province in the same month and frequently moved from city to city to avoid being caught.
He will be charged with organized crime, conducting illegal business, interfering with public administration, attacking government organizations, intentional injury, sheltering criminals, and covering up crime.
Guanfenghua had allegedly been involved in five areas of illegal activities including assaults, resisting police with violence, illegal business dealings, taking property by force and organizing illegal security forces.
Guanfenghua s security guards had injured more than 300 people, including a number of policemen, police sources said. The company was also accused of confronting law enforcement officers in 13 incidents since 1995.
The head of Guanfenghua, Chen Yifeng, was arrested in April 2004 and sentenced to 10 years in jail in 2006 after being convicted of using violence to further his business interests.
Chen, who was a member of the Guangdong advisory body, perpetrated his own version of rags-to-riches after he came to Shenzhen to work as a migrant laborer 20 years ago.
