A FORMER employee of Shenzhen Airlines was ordered to pay 155,107 yuan (US$23,500) in compensation to the family of Yu Dandan, an air hostess who killed herself in March last year.

The sum Chen Weizhong paid to Yu s mother, Wei Xuejing, included 125,107 yuan for physical injury and 30,000 yuan for psychological trauma. Chen was a former executive of Shenzhen Airline s Beijing Hotel.

The Bao an District People s Court said Chen, then Yu s internship supervisor, should bear 20 percent responsibility for the young woman s death. Yu, 22, took her life March 7 last year in a hotel near Shenzhen Airport.

She was a student at the Civil Aviation University of China when she was recruited by Shenzhen Airlines as a flight attendant in August in 2009. During a two-month training course at the airline s Beijing hotel, she became involved in a relationship with Chen, who had a family. Yu wanted to end the relationship when she returned to Shenzhen for her job. Chen followed her, saying he would divorce his wife and marry her.

On the day before her death, text messages between the two showed they had planned to commit suicide after Chen decided he could not divorce his wife.

On March 7, Yu hanged herself in a hotel near the Shenzhen airport. Chen disappeared after Yu s death and his phone went unanswered.

Chen didn t do anything to stop Yu when he knew she wanted to kill herself. Instead, he sent back messages that added fuel to the flames which led to the death of Yu. Chen should be partially responsible for this, the court said.
