THE number of people seeking work in the Shenzhen Job Market in Luohu District dropped by more than 50 percent from October to December compared with the same period in 2009, according to statistics released by the market Saturday.

Many people left Shenzhen to escape high housing prices and living expenses, while some were waiting for jobs with better prospects, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

After the financial crisis in 2008, some companies increased salaries to retain employees, which had also resulted in decreases in the number of jobseekers, the market said in a report released at the weekend.

Shenzhen faced a shortage of jobseekers before the Spring Festival every year and more people were expected to return after the festival, the report said.

Meanwhile, the number of positions offered by companies had increased by 11.66 percent in the last three months last year compared with 2009, while the number of company vacancies had increased by 13.88 percent.

More staff was needed in some industries where productivity had increased sharply over a year ago, the report said.

Vacancies in the entertainment and finance industries had dropped by nearly half over the last three months of 2010 compared with 2009.
