A PUBLIC Security Bureau officer went on trial at the Shenzhen Intermediate People s Court on charges of corruption and abuse of authority, Chinese-language media reported.
Lu Xiaoqiong, who was in charge of registration of hukou, or permanent residence permits, at the bureau s population management department, stood accused of having taken 2.13 million yuan (US$322,728) in bribes, in return to falsify procedures for 300 applicants for hukou.
Between July and August in 2008, Lu received forged documents four times from a man, identified only as Liu, who also gave Lu the money each time ranging from 400,000 yuan to 500,000 yuan, the Shenzhen Evening News reported on Thursday.
Lu had also bribed other officers in the bureau to approve the illegal applications.
Seven bureau officers were involved, the paper said without elaborating.
The bureau discovered the forged applications in October in 2008 and launched an investigation.
Lu later returned all the money to Liu in the hope of receiving lighter punishment. Hukou gained by the falsified documents was annulled by the end of 2008, the paper said. (Li Hao)
