THE city s social work won national awards in Beijing on Tuesday, the Shenzhen Economic Daily reported Thursday.
Liu Runhua, chief of the Shenzhen civil affairs bureau, was chosen as one of the country s Top 10 Social Workers of the Year for his commitment and contribution to push forward the development of Shenzhen s social services, the Daily said.
In 2007, Liu was appointed head of a special task force dedicated to building a citywide social service network. Liu had helped set up a registration system for social workers under which social work has become a full-time occupation.
The achievement in social services in Shenzhen has been inspiring for social work nationwide and Liu is a pioneer in this aspect, said Minister of Civil Affairs Li Liguo.
Shenzhen has been known throughout the country for its nongovernmental social work activities. Social-service organizations in Shenzhen are independent of the government and the government pays for social services, Liu said.
Liu said the award was an acknowledgement of his work. I felt encouraged.
The paper said the city s social work has made great achievement under the leadership of Liu.
A social service center with 425 social workers opened in the Longhua complex of electronics maker Foxconn last year following a number of suicides of factory workers. The center provides psychological counseling for Foxconn workers.
It was listed among the nation s Top 10 Social Work Achievements last year, the paper said.
Liu said the city would set up 100 community social service centers this year. The city government will give each a 500,000-yuan (US$75,890) subsidy to cover operating expenses.
There will be 700 social service centers throughout the city by 2015, Liu said.
