FUTIAN police have arrested three suspects who allegedly defrauded people by offering foreign exchange services.
In the latest incident Jan. 10, the three suspects stopped a man named Peng on his way to a bank to exchange US$24,000 into renminbi, claiming to be foreign exchange professionals and offering a favorable exchange rate, the Shenzhen Evening News reported Wednesday.
After reaching an agreement, the suspects showed Peng two bags of renminbi equivalent to US$24,000 and then gave him the bags.
The suspects offered to go to the bank with Peng to deposit the money.
However, the three suspects disappeared on the way to the bank. When Peng opened the bags, he found stacks of 1-yuan (US$0.15) notes, the paper said.
Peng called police who arrested the suspects Jan. 15.
The suspects admitted targeting people wanting to exchange foreign currency. They then baited them with favorable exchange rates.
They succeeded in committing four acts of fraud before they were arrested.
