SHENZHEN police had detained 1,358 drivers for drunk driving in 2010, an increase of 24 percent compared with 2009, a meeting of Shenzhen traffic police was told yesterday.

This number accounted for nearly two-thirds of the drivers who were detained for various violations such as false plates and leaving the scene of fatal accidents.

Police checked and punished 2.57 million violations during the year.

The city reported 1,711 accidents involving death and injuries in 2010, a decrease of 12 percent. A total of 564 people were killed and 1,895 injured, a decrease of 8.63 percent, police said.

Police also took measures to ease traffic jams. Monitoring of the city s 10 major arteries such as Binhe, Shennan, Hongli and Xinzhou showed the average speed at rush hours was 41.16 km/h.

Police registered 290,500 vehicles in 2010, or 24,200 vehicles a month, bringing the total number vehicles in the city to 1.72 million at the end of 2010.
