LONGGANG police have detained three men who allegedly beat a migrant worker into a coma Jan. 22.
The victim, Ling Jianming, 24, was pronounced brain dead by doctors Monday.
Ling was employed to replace old electric wiring in the Ailian residential community. He was moving scrap electric wires with other workers when the attackers appeared and stopped them on the night of Jan. 22.
The three men, who were carrying iron bars, claimed Ling and the others were stealing the wiring, said another worker who escaped.
The other workers said they heard Ling s cries, but could not see who beat him.
Longgang police said they received a call from the three attackers, who were vigilantes hired to maintain order in the community, and were told that a thief had been caught.
The Longcheng Subdistrict Office said there was nothing wrong with Ling and his fellow workers disposing of the old cables, which were worthless.
