Back wages

FOUR employers in Shenzhen were named and shamed by the human resources and social security administration Monday for owing more than 710,000 yuan (US$107,850) in back wages to their employees. Authorities have taken out nearly 700,000 yuan from the city s back pay guarantee fund to pay the employees.

Expressway opens

QINGLIAN Expressway opened to traffic yesterday, enabling Shenzhen residents to drive north using a road free of ice and with fewer slopes during the Spring Festival holidays.

The 215-kilometer expressway runs from Qingyuan in northern Guangdong Province to Lianzhou, which borders Hunan Province. It runs parallel with Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway, is about 300-500 meters lower in altitude and is less likely to be affected by ice and fog during winter, earlier reports said.

Construction safety

PROJECT contractors have been required to report to authorities if their work is to continue during the Spring Festival holidays. The city housing and construction bureau has ordered safety inspections be conducted at construction sites throughout the city before the festival.

Construction should be halted if safety risks are detected and construction would be halted until hazards are eliminated, the bureau said.

Double drowning

TWO employees of an ecological park in Bao an District drowned when they were sent to catch wild ducks in a pool Monday afternoon. It took rescuers nearly two hours to recover the bodies. The victims families have blamed the park management for sending the men into the pool even though it was known they couldn t swim.
