A BAO AN hospital denied any wrongdoing in the death of a pregnant woman who allegedly had extremely high blood pressure in a labor room Sunday night.

Shen Xiaoyu, 34, died after receiving an injection before doctors were to perform a C-section delivery, Chinese-language newspapers reported yesterday.

According to the paper, Shen refused the C-section because the baby wasn t due until next month. She said it was not good for the baby if we had the operation now, said Shen s husband, identified only as Su.

He said, however, the hospital insisted on performing the operation because Shen and her baby were in critical condition because of dangerously high blood pressure threatening their health.

An unidentified spokesperson for Longhua People s Hospital said Shen s blood-pressure reading was 180/120. She had high blood pressure and felt uncomfortable for a week, the spokesperson said, which was confirmed by Su.

But Shen began bleeding from the mouth and nose after the injection. She failed to respond to treatment and was pronounced dead 40 minutes later.

Su said Shen felt she was under great pressure from the doctors intimidating words, which pushed her blood pressure higher.

The hospital denied responsibility saying the doctors had followed proper procedures. Police have been called in. (SD News)
