A TOTAL of 1,893 college students will spend their Spring Festival in Shenzhen as volunteers instead of going home, the city committee of the Communist Youth League of China said Friday.

Most of these students were from areas such as Tibet and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and poor families which could not afford the high cost of travel.

They will participate in voluntary work organized by the committee, including offering travel information for passengers at railway stations and airport, taking care of the elderly and orphans at social welfare centers, cleaning city streets, and join in volunteer training for the Universiade.

Each student received a 50-yuan telephone card from the committee and some will hold parties together on Spring Festival Eve, which falls on Wednesday.

It s lonely spending the Spring Festival alone in Shenzhen, but I think it is nice to join in voluntary work so I can have a fun and meaningful holiday, said Wu Chong, a sophomore at Shenzhen University.
