Air quality

THE air quality in Shenzhen dropped by 5.4 percent in the fourth quarter last year compared with the same period in 2009. The daily average concentration of nitrogen dioxide and inhalable particles had also increased year on year, according to a report released by the city environment commission.

Power grid

SOME 4.3 billion yuan (US$653 million) will be spent on the power grid in Shenzhen this year, the city power supply bureau said Saturday.

The bureau also said it would try every means possible to guarantee zero accidents in the power grid to help ensure the success of the Summer Universiade in Shenzhen in August.

Fireworks seized

NANSHAN police seized 3 tons of fireworks from a rented apartment in Daxin Village, Nantou, on Friday.

Five people were detained for questioning.

The sales, manufacture and transport of fireworks to Shenzhen are forbidden and offenders can be fined 1,000-5,000 yuan and detained for 15 days. Offenders responsible for causing fire or fatalities or damaging property would face criminal charges.

Road names

A TOTAL of 471 roads and 240 bridges and tunnels that formerly had not been named now have names following a year of research by the government, according to the city urban planning, land and resources commission.

The public was asked to submit opinions and suggestions for these names to 52 subdistrict government offices.

The unnamed roads and bridges were mainly in Futian Central Business District and Yantian port areas and some had been without a name for more than 10 years.

Housing subsidies

SHENZHEN will hand out housing subsidies to 652 high-caliber professionals in the first quarter of this year, the city human resources and social security administration said. The list of recipients will be posted for public review for five days.

Elevator fall

A WORKER survived a fall from the 12th floor of a residential building under construction in Bao an District on Friday. He suffered a fractured lumbar vertebra, head injuries and bruises to his right leg.

The injured man, surnamed Zhou, was removing cables from an elevator when it suddenly dropped to the second floor. Zhou, 37, was taken to Shajing People s Hospital.
