New district heads
NI ZEWANG was elected head of the Luohu District Government at the seventh session of the Fifth Luohu District People s Congress, which ended Wednesday. Ni formerly held a management position at Huawei.
Jiang Jianjun was elected head of the Longgang District Government at the eighth session of the Fourth Longgang District People s Congress, which also ended Wednesday.
Rescue work
SHENZHEN S maritime search and rescue center conducted 298 search and rescue operations at sea in the past five years, recovering about 120 million yuan (US$18 million), the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported Thursday.
Smugglers caught
SHENZHEN Customs caught two men trying to smuggle seafood weighing 2,300 kilograms into Shenzhen on Monday. The suspects were allegedly bringing the seafood in on speedboats in Yantian District, customs said.
Bank-card theft
THREE suspects were detained in connection with the theft of 300,000 yuan using stolen bank-card information in Dongguan recently. They were allegedly members of a gang that installed equipment at ATMs to copy bankcard information. They had allegedly withdrawn money from 39 accounts using bank cards made with stolen information.
Police were searching for their accomplices.
Stolen cars
TWO suspects were recently detained by police for allegedly stealing cars in Fujian Province and Shenzhen.
One of the suspects, identified as He, was wanted for stealing and using a forged ID card to elude police, while the other, identified as Peng, had been jailed for 9 years for theft and robbery. He was released in 2007. Police allege they had stolen at least 20 cars and sold them in Pingtan, Fujian Province, and Jieyang, Guangdong Province.
