Man held for taking pedestrian hostage

A MAN took a woman hostage after plain-clothes police officers were about to question him near the Friendship Bookstore on Renmin Road North in Longhua, Bao an District, on Tuesday.

According to a police officer with Longcheng Police Station, identified only as Wu, they found the man acting suspiciously near a bus stop opposite the Longhua Subdistrict Office building. The man, a native of Hubei Province, declined to answer police questions and refused to show his ID. He suddenly turned and tried to escape, taking the woman pedestrian hostage at knife point. Police subdued the man when he tried to board a bus. The woman was slightly injured with cuts to her arm and neck.

Bao an police said the man was detained twice in April and July for assault. Police questioning revealed he had come to Shenzhen from Dongguan. He had tried to escape because he was carrying a restricted knife.
