Truck-car collision
A DUMP truck overturned and crushed the front of a car near the intersection of Binhe Boulevard and Xinsha Road on Tuesday. The truck driver was trapped inside and lost consciousness. The car driver stopped a passing fire engine to help rescue the truck driver.
It took about half an hour for an ambulance to arrive and take the truck driver to hospital, witnesses said.
Drunk driving
THREE drivers were detained for drunk driving on the Spring Festival Eve and spent the holidays in a detention center, the city traffic police bureau said.
About 600 traffic police officers and more than 160 police cars were deployed for the campaign against drink driving on the Spring Festival Eve and the first day of the Lunar New Year. A total of 12 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol were detected, of which three involved drunk driving. Police also detected 121 other traffic offenses such as unlicensed driving and the illegal use of car lights.
Rider killed
AN unlicensed motorcycle rider was killed when his motorcycle collided with a truck on Meilong Road in Bao an District on Tuesday morning. The truck driver fled the scene.
The motorcycle rider was on the wrong side of the road when the incident happened, a witness surnamed Jiang said.
Busy street
AN average of 4,000 permits to enter Zhongying Street were issued each day during the Spring Festival holidays, frontier accreditation center officials said.
About 20,000 people visited the street bordering Shenzhen and Hong Kong on Tuesday. Many goods were out of stock because of the surge in the number of shoppers.
