SHENZHEN was bestowed the title of an advanced city in voluntary blood donation for the seventh consecutive year at a national meeting Tuesday.
The city began promoting blood donations in 1993. From May 8, 1993 to Dec. 31 last year, more than 1.79 million residents had donated a total of 358 tons of blood for nearly 600,000 patients.
Residents have also been encouraged to donate stem cells since 2003. The number of donors in the city s database is now more than 26,000.
At the award ceremony Tuesday, 649 Shenzhen residents won gold medals, 173 silver medals and 468 bronze medals for donating blood. Twenty-four donors from Shenzhen were awarded for donating stem cells.
