A MIGRANT worker dance troupe will perform at the World Universiade Youth Carnival in August in a cultural exchange with young people from around the world.

Members of the troupe, Fuyong Migrant Worker Hip-Hop Dance Group, have started learning English so they can communicate with young dancers coming to the carnival and participate in more international exchange activities and competitions, Zheng Shaofeng, leader of the group, said at a meeting with students from Shenzhen Polytechnic.

Zhang Zhihua, vice head of the city s committee of the Communist Youth League of China, said they would help arrange more opportunities for them to perform on the international stage.

The group received a total of 500,000 yuan (US$76,023) in awards from the Bao an District Government and the Fuyong Subdistrict Office last Wednesday.

Some 60 percent of the money would be used for daily expenses, while the remaining sum was divided equally among the members. Each of us received 8,000 yuan and the first thing I did was to send some to my parents, said Xiao Mi, one of the members.

The troupe also shared their stories and had a small break dance competition with students from Shenzhen Polytechnic. I am so impressed with their stories. As long as you keep doing it with passion, there will be rewards eventually, said Wen Jun, a student at the school.

The troupe was formed by 15 migrant workers in Fuyong, Bao an District. All aged around 20, the dancers work in construction and restaurants. Their performance at this year s China Central Television Spring Festival Gala won first prize in the category for special programs for the station and gained a national reputation. (Wang Yuanyuan)
