A WOMAN who abducted a child 14 years ago was detained by Shenzhen police in Kunming City, Yunnan Province, on Sunday.
The woman, surnamed Zhong, 37, abducted a neighbor s baby in 1997 and pressed her boyfriend Xie to marry her by claiming the baby was his son, Luohu police said Monday.
Zhong had an affair with Xie in 1992 and they broke up in 1996.
The baby s father, Li, called police in June 1997, saying their 3-month-old baby had disappeared from Nigang Village in Luohu District and his neighbor, a woman surnamed Tian, was suspected.
Li had left the baby in the care of Tian. But when he returned that evening, Tian had disappeared and had switched off her mobile phone.
Li and his wife called police but the case was shelved because police could not find any information about Tian in the police databank.
The couple told police in November 2009 that the baby had a mole in the center of the boy s forehead.
Police set up a task force and interviewed four people in the village, including the landlord, 14 years ago. Police finally found a friend of Tian and then her brother.
They then learned Tian was also known as Zhong.
Police later found Zhong and learned the she and Xie had raised a boy born in May 1996. The boy was a teenager at a middle school in Kaiping and had a mole in the center of his forehead.
Xie, who was working at a hotel in Guangzhou, did not believe the boy he had raised for 13 years was abducted, but he agreed to a DNA test. The teenager was returned to his parents in June 2010. (Han Ximin)
