Patent applications

SHENZHEN topped China in the number of international patent applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty for the seventh consecutive year last year with 5,584 applications, an increase of 46.95 percent over the previous year.

Battery explosion

TWO garbage recyclers were injured when a scrap battery they had collected exploded in Bao an District on Tuesday.

The two, identified as Zhou and Li, suffered burns to their faces. Doctors said the injuries were not life-threatening but they would be kept in hospital for observation.

Ocean smuggling

SHENZHEN Customs uncovered six ocean smuggling cases between Feb. 25 and 27, according to the department.

The seizures included second-hand luxury sedans, seafood and boat engines.

Truck hits fence

TWO people, including the driver, were injured when a garbage truck hit the dividing fence under a footbridge on National Highway 107 in Bao an District on Tuesday. The incident was suspected to have been caused by driver fatigue.

Landlord fined

A LANDLORD in Bao an District was fined 5,280 yuan (US$803) Monday for failing to register with the rental management authority after leasing an apartment and failing to install a video surveillance system and a surveillance camera.

The tenant, surnamed Yang, found his notebook computer and a bank card had been stolen by burglars Dec. 10 and reported to authorities. Law enforcement officers with the Guanlan Subdistrict Office s rental management station found the landlord, Liao, signed a three-year contract with Yang but they had not registered with the authority as required.
