NEARLY 700 students from Shenzhen Foreign Languages School study abroad for at least one year through exchange programs every year.

In an attempt to become a first-class international middle school, the school often invites foreign students and teachers in exchange programs, Xie Zengsheng, director of the admission office of the school, said yesterday before the opening of mathematics workshop by Canadian teacher Jen Nisson.

It was the second time a teacher from the University of Waterloo in Canada had given a lecture at the school.

We would like to give more lectures to the students and welcome them to study at our university in the future, said Nisson.

About 100 students, most of whom are Junior 3 and Senior 1, are exchanged at U.S., Japan schools for one year.

Under an exchange program with the University of Toronto initiated in 2007, 140 students attended the university and 28 would attend in August, Xie said.

This program is very successful because the school helps parents with the procedures, Xie said.

The school was negotiating with several foreign universities, including the University of Waterloo in Canada, the Turin Polytechnic University in Italy, Ritsumeikan University and Waseda University in Japan, for more green channels for students who want to study abroad.

Meanwhile, the school also has Advanced Placement (AP) courses. A total of 41 students took the examinations and 29 earned full marks.

The exchange programs also cover Germany, France and Japan.
