MANY residents had complained about bad smells on several city streets recently, saying the strong odor had made them uncomfortable and was a bad image for the city.
Relevant departments said the bad smell was from a kind of fertilizer, which was not to be used in public facilities, Saturday s Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.
This bad smell lasted for several days. In the beginning, I thought I had stepped in feces. The smell comes from the greenbelts along the road and it makes me feel sick all the time, said a police assistant working on Shennan Boulevard at the section near Wuzhou Guest House in Futian District.
Some residents had also reported bad smells in several other places, such as Baishaling Community Park, Sungang Road and Shangbu Road in Futian District. It is unbearable to stay at home all day, a resident surnamed Feng told the paper.
We use an organic mushroom fertilizer on the greenbelt in front of Wuzhou Guest House. The fertilizer is smelly, but it is very good for canna lilies, a manager surnamed Peng from Shenzhen Liangyuan Green Engineering Co. Ltd. said.
Peng said they used the smelly fertilizer only at a particular time of the year, when the canna lily is growing in spring. It is smelly, but if we substituted it with an odorless compound fertilizer, the canna lily would not grow as well, Peng said.
