SHENZHEN University has moved 675 male students out of two dormitory buildings which are considered unsafe.
Built in 1984, the two buildings were found to have serious potential safety hazards after a 2.8-magnitude earthquake last November, Southern Metropolis Daily reported Thursday.
Short of dormitories, the school has asked local students to live at home and has offered a 500-yuan (US$76) monthly transport subsidy.
Students from outside Shenzhen were either relocated to other dormitories or accommodated at hotels near the school, the paper said.
A teacher with the school dormitory management center, surnamed Sun, said some graduating seniors were expected to leave the school in two months, allowing the students living in hotels to return.
Students living in Longgang and Bao an districts have complained that the 500-yuan subsidy was not enough because they had to rent apartments near the school. (Li Hao)
