Walmart s shredded squid to be tested

THE test result of a shredded squid sold at the city s Walmart Supermarkets will be announced next week and the city s quality administration will determine whether it contains excessive formaldehyde as reported.

The quality administration took a sample of the Great Value shredded squid Saturday morning at the supermarket to investigate whether the excessive formaldehyde was added during the production process.

A resident, identified as Li Xuesong, reported to the department Saturday morning, saying Great Value shredded squid produced and sold by Walmart Supermarkets contained excessive amount of formaldehyde.

According to a test he did at the city s Academy of Metrology & Quality Inspection on Feb. 11, the amount of formaldehyde was 83.8 milligrams per kilogram and Li said it was 419 times more than the national standards.

However, the supermarket said that their products all received strict tests by the manufacturers, supermarkets and quality inspection administrations.

I did not agree to the result given by Li as this report was not compiled by authoritative departments, manager of the public affairs department of Walmart, Gao Xiaomao, said.

According to the quality administration, test reports submitted by individuals cannot be used as evidence.

Formaldehyde is a kind of protoplast which the aquatic animals can generate during metabolism, so it requires some time to find out whether the formaldehyde is added naturally, an unidentified staffer of the quality administration said.

A lawyer, identified as Guan Feng, also said that whether the product was up to standard would be judged by the sample taken by the quality administration, not individuals. If an individual wants to take the sample test himself, he should be accompanied by a notary, Guan said.
