POLICE will add dividing fences at 26 intersections on Shenhui Road in a move to curb fatal accidents.
In the three months after the road was opened Jan. 1 following renovation, nine people have been killed and 18 injured, police say.
The accidents were triggered by jaywalkers, but the root cause of the fatalities was that unsound transport facilities, such as the shortage of footbridges, road-dividing fences and too many intersections, Shao Qingmin, the Longgang brigade of the city traffic police bureau, said at a meeting Tuesday.
The 36-km road, which runs through Longgang and links Luohu and Huizhou, is part of the National Highway 205 and has been known as the city s deadliest road.
Authorities started the road s renovation in 2007 along with the construction of Metro Line 3. In 2010 alone, there were 89 accidents on the road involving death and injuries.
Along the road, a total of 97 footbridges were designed. But even after the road was put into use in January, some of the bridges had not yet opened. The renovation has made life more convenient for motorists, yet riskier for pedestrians.
The installation of the road fences will start in April.
