Officer attacked

A TRAINEE police officer was attacked from behind with a brick while writing tickets for vehicles illegally parked at a roadside in Lequn Community, Xixiang Subdistrict in Bao an District on Tuesday. After the attackers escaped, the 19-year-old trainee officer, Wang, was taken to hospital for treatment.

A few people approached the officer and one of them struck him on the head with a brick and knocked him to the ground, said a witness who refused to give his name.

Wang, who received treatment at Xixiang Hospital, said the attacker was probably one of the cars owners. The case is still being investigated.

Violations checked

SHENZHEN police checked 2,097 violations of illegally changing lanes in a two-hour action Tuesday.

Police mobilized all monitoring cameras in its toughest-ever action over such violation. According to the rule, each violator will be fined 300 yuan (US$46).

Smuggled iPad2

SHENZHEN Customs seized five smuggled iPad2 at Huanggang Checkpoint on Tuesday.

It was the department s first seizure of the Apple device, which has not been on the market in China.

The smuggled iPad2 has, however, been available in Hong Kong, with retail prices of at least HK$8,000 (US$1,026).

Veggie prices

THE average cost of vegetables at Buji Farm Produce Wholesale Market reached 1.93 yuan per 500 grams Tuesday. Leafy vegetables increased in price by 9 percent to reach 1.6 yuan per 500 grams compared with just one week earlier.

Egg prices had been dropping after the Spring Festival due to ample supply, market officials said.

Landlord fined

THE owner of an apartment in Guangming New Zone was fined more than 2,000 yuan Tuesday for failing to register the property with authorities. The landlord, Luo, leased the home to a man who died of gas poisoning just one day after he moved in.
