MOTORISTS who illegally change lanes and cut up other vehicles waiting for traffic lights will be fined 300 yuan (US$50) and have two points deducted.

If such violations are accumulated to three times a year, the motorists will be fined 500 yuan for each violation, police said yesterday.

Those vehicles that overtake other vehicles by driving in opposite lanes will be fined 200 yuan and have three points deducted, police said.

Vehicles that make illegal U-turn or don t turn on the signaling light while changing directions will be fined 200 yuan and have one point deducted.

Drivers are restricted from changing two lanes at one time. Drivers who obstruct traffic by doing so will be fined 200 yuan.

The new rule was implemented yesterday and police will videotape the violations through traffic cameras and street patrols.

In addition, police have encouraged residents to report such violations through the police s microblogs and multimedia messages.
