Lower mercury delays blossom

THE city s minimum temperature is expected to drop to 12 degrees Celsius today because of the cold front from the north which has been affecting Shenzhen since yesterday.

The cold front will also bring strong winds to the coastal areas along with light rain.

The city recorded a temperature of 27.8 degrees Celsius on Monday, the highest this spring, Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory said yesterday.

The cold front also caused a plunge of 8-10 degrees Celsius in northern Guangdong and 6-8 degrees Celsius in central Guangdong.

The frequent cold fronts and low temperatures have caused a delay to the blossoming of litchi trees which generally starts at the end of February or early March.

Xili Orchard, the city s largest litchi production base, expects the blossoming of litchi trees this year to start around Sunday.

Li Ke, deputy head of the orchard, said the delays were caused by the low temperatures of the winter and early spring.

At the orchard, only Feizixiao, one of the varieties, had started to blossom. Xili Orchard has 40,000 litchi trees of three species of litchis such as Feizixiao, Nuomici and Guiwei. The species will be on the market late in June, about two weeks later than the previous years.
