100-km hike

MORE than 15,000 people participated in the annual 100-kilometer hike through Shenzhen at the weekend to mark the Summer Universiade in August.

Some 8,500 participants completed the walk at Jinsha Bay Beach in Longgang District.

New term

A CEREMONY was held at Southern University of Science and Technology of China to mark the spring term Sunday. The first 45 students at the university attended their first classes yesterday.

Car thefts

POLICE have caught in Jieyang, Guangdong Province, six suspects allegedly involved in a number of vehicle thefts in Shenzhen.

The officers seized two firearms, four stolen cars and other tools commonly used to steal vehicles. The gang leader, Fu, had allegedly confessed to the crime.

Factory explosion

A WORKER was injured in an explosion of an oil pipe in a factory in Bao an District on Sunday. Every window in the factory was shattered by the explosion s force, witnesses said.

The injured worker, who was not identified by police, suffered only minor injuries.

The cause of the incident is being investigated.

Passenger killed

A MAN who got off a bus in the middle of the road was killed by an oncoming truck Sunday evening.

According to a passenger surnamed Li, the bus was running from Shiyan to Longhua when the driver allowed a young passenger in his 20s to get off the bus after stopping in the middle of the road near the Yangtai Mountain area.

The man was knocked down by the truck from behind as he was walking to the pavement.

The case is still under investigation.

Minor tremors

RESIDENTS have been told not to worry about earthquakes in the east of Taiwan and the northern Philippines which happened Sunday, the Shenzhen seismological bureau said.

Some residents in Shenzhen felt a small tremor at around 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

According to the seismological bureau, it was a 6.5-magnitude earthquake in the sea to the north of the Philippines. The epicenter was far from the city and there was no evidence to suggest it was linked to the Japan earthquake.
