A FORMER traffic police officer was sentenced to three years in prison Friday for causing the death of a retired soldier while driving under the influence of alcohol.
Wang Fengli, a former traffic police officer in Guangming New Zone, was taken into custody Jan. 13 last year, nearly two weeks after the accident that killed Zou Weixian, 24, a former frontier soldier who worked at a factory in Longhua Subdistrict, Bao an District.
Wang, 29, said he would not appeal the ruling handed down by Bao an District People s Court.
Court documents show that Wang was on his way home from a friend s wedding banquet when he struck down the victim near the intersection of Bayi Road and Renmin Road in Bao an on Jan. 2 last year.
Although Wang turned himself in after receiving a notice from police demanding he cooperate with the investigation, the judge still decided not to be lenient or to give a suspended sentence citing the detriment to society that had been caused.
Wang had his vehicle fixed at a repair shop the day after the incident. He also falsified an accident scene, trying to cover up his crime, according to the court documents.
Wang s family compensated Zou s parents 600,000 yuan (US$91,338) after the incident. The two parties reached a settlement and Zou s family had appealed to the court not to prosecute Wang for his criminal liabilities. (SD News)
